Q: How do I make more Thumbnails appear in Video Clips on the Sony Vegas Timeline?

Answer: Change your Vegas Preferemce settings.

When you place any Video Clip on the Vegas Pro or Vegas Movie Studio Timeline, the program automatically creates thumbnail pictures which represent what the video looks like at particular time points. By default, Vegas normally places one thumbnail at the beginning, middle and end of each video clip. If the video clip is quite long, there can be large blank spaces between each thumbnail, which make it difficult to know what is displaying at those points of the video.

Fortunately there are some settings which can be changed in the Vegas Preferences Settings.

Go to Options - Preferences - Video tab

Now you can change how thumbnails are created and displayed.

Set "Thumbnails to show in video events" = ALL

Hello Derek, i want to chose a specific picture from the video as the main thumbnail for the whole video, is that possible? if yes, how can i make it? :)

  Good video indeed, i learned something new thanks :)
  But concerning the thumbnail, when i render the video and look at the video file it doesn't have the thumnail picture that i desire, it shows another random moment picture from within the video..

  I just realised that I read your original question incorrectly.
  You cannot set custom thumbnails using a video editing program or Windows settings.
  You will need to use 3rd party software to do this.
  I recommend [url=http://www.mediamonkey.com/trialpay]Media Monkey[/url] free edition.
  Use black download link on left side.
  Once installed, navigate to My Computer (left column) and find the folder where videos are located.
  Right-click video from list and select [b]Properties[/b].
  Then go to [b]Artwork[/b] and upload custom thumbnail your created with Movie Studio/Vegas.
  When you go back to the folder in computer and refresh page, you should see new thumbnail.

  One of my biggest media concerns is solved, i'm lucky i subscribed to this website :!: and in case i moved the video to another place, device or media storage, will the custom thumbnail remain i hope?

  I am not an expert with Media Monkey, but I am 99.99% sure custom thumbnails are edited into the original video file. So it does not rely on Media Monkey if it is un-installed.
