There is a very common problem that people using Hauppage PVR Units ask me. Why does their video screen capture not display properly in Sony Vegas Pro or Sony Movie Studio Platinum?
What happens is that only one quarter of the video is diplayed in the Preview Window of Vegas.
Fortunately there is a very simple explanation. Hauppauge Personal Video Recorders "PVRs" give users the option to record with three different video codecs/formats. One of those possible choices is not compatible with any version of Sony Vegas Software. The format that causes problems is the .mp4 choice and the reason why this happens is becasue the codec that Hauppauge uses with the .mp4 container is only compatible with Xbox 360 Machines.
The three choices that Hauppauge gives you is .TS, .M2TS ot .MP4
The best choice for working with Sony Vegas is to record to .m2ts. If you do this all your problems will be fixed, however you will need a decent computer to edit this kind of file with. M2TS files are fairly large and highly compressed, so that means that Vegas and your Computer have to do a lot of work to keep the video playing back smoothly with "no lag" in the Preview Window. So when working with this kind of file, please reduce the Preview Window display settings so that Vegas can have a better chance of playing your file smoothly.

Diagnosing any problem with Sony Vegas Pro or Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum can be extremely frustrating at times, however a methodical approach is the best way.
Experience has shown me that 90% of problems that people encounter are mainly due to user error. Quite often one tiny little icon or internal settng has been activated my mistake, which can then cause a seemingly very large problem with your entire Vegas project.
The next thing people start to do is hurl abuse at the program and their computer and start believing their world is coming to an end. If you stay calm and be methodical most problems can be worked out fairly quickly when you supply the right information to the Doctor.
The best way for a fast diagnosis of any problem is to show and tell an expert as much information as possible about your problem and the configuration of your computer. Being able to see exactly what your Vegas Desktop, Settings and Computer Configuration look like is a great step in the right direction.
Video Screen Capture
A Video Screen Capture is the best way to show anyone what you are doing on your computer. Video Screen Capture software needs to be bought separately just like Sony Vegas. There are countless different programs you can choose from to perform this task. So at the end of my video tutorial I share with you some of the programs I have used and would recommend for you to try out.
If you do end up making a Video Screen Capture of Vegas for me, then all you have to do next is upload it to YouTube. You have the option of making the video private if you would like, in which case you then need to send me a direct link.

Sony Creative Software is always releasing new build versions of all their software, so it is important to make sure your version is up to date.
Vegas Pro 11 and Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 in particular are continually being updated to fix bugs and performance issues and also to add new features. So if you actually own a registered copy of Vegas, DVD Architect Studio, Sound Forge Audio Studio, etc.....then you are entitled to download for free any new build versions of the program that may be released during the lifetime of the particular version you own.
There is an automatic update feature within all versions of Sony Creative Software, which checks for new build versions everytime you boot up a program. If a new free build has been released a pop up window will give you a direct link to the download area at SCS.
Sometimes the automatic update procedure will fail on a computer. This is normally caused by an over zealous virus protector program or web browser which blocks the pop up window from activating. This is why it is a good idea from time to time to manually check for updates. Please watch my video tutorial and I will show you exactly what to do
Updating Third Party Plug-ins
Most people using Vegas Pro or Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 will have some third party plug-ins installed like NewBlueFx or BorixFx. All these pieces of software should also be checked for updates as well.
Just like with Sony Vegas there should be some automatic tools which check this for you, however New Blue especially can experience some big problems especially with older versions of their software. As an example I discovered the the NewBlue "Check for Updates" link in their software was producing a false reading. Basically saying that no updates are available when there actually was. I show how to get around this problem in the video tutorial as well.
So remember to check for updates !
