My understanding is that AVC (aka mpeg4 aka H264) is much more efficient than mpeg2 which was designed for SD. So AVC at a lower bitrate has as much detail as mpeg2 at a higher bitrate. I forget the figures but it was something like AVC at 16 mbps is as good as mpeg2 at 22 mbps.

Unfortunately there are no black and white answers.
Everyone will recommend what works for them, but you need to use what works for you.
What works for one person on their computer, may not work the same on yours.
