Hello Derek and I hope you are well.

I was looking at your tutorial on Handbrake and have a few questions. The tutorial was back in 2018 I believe and you were using Handbrake version 1.1.1 which I have downloaded and installed and it appears to be working fine. Before, however, I downloaded the latest version which was 1.4.2, and installed it OK. However, when I tried to run it I had the message that I needed to install .net for it to run. I tried to do this but it seems without success. Do you have any advice and what version of Handbrake are you using?

I usually use a dedicated 4K camcorder to record as mp4 files in 25p. However I sometimes have footage from my iPhone, and I was interested in your comments about it being difficult to render as the frame rate is variable. As a result I am going to use Handbrake, as per your video, to convert it to a fixed frame rate of 25p.

Any comments and suggestions will be most welcome as always.

Very best wishes

.NET Framework is required for many different programs to function correctly.
I have Handbrake 1.4.2 installed on Windows 10 and it is working perfectly OK.

Sounds like you have a problem in Windows. Resetting .NET Framework will usually fix this problem.
I posted instructions on the forum here. Please note the versions you see on your computer, may differ slightly.

Hello again Derek,

Thank you for the link to the instructions. I followed the instructions but Handbrake 1.4.2 still gives me the same error message about ,NET Framework. I have reverted to 1.1.1 which seems to work fine. Any further suggestions you can give would be appreciated. I have a brand new PC with Windows 10 version 21H2, running the same AMD processor as you.

Thanks again

HI Bob
If Handbrake 1.1 is working for you then by all means go with what works.
According to the Handbrake website  v1.4 requires dotnet framework version 5 (runtime version) which can be downloaded and installed from dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/5.0 Multiple versions of the dot net framework can be installed and functional at the same time.  If you want to check what you currently have installed open File Explorer and enter
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework
in the address bar and you’ll see the various folders for each of the installed versions.

Cheers, Robbie

Thanks @Robbie for that excellent information.

@BobH Handbrake does have an official forum where you can post any problems with using the program.

Thank you Robbie and Derek for your replies and suggestions. Version 1.1.1 is working for me and probably does all I need at this time. However I will follow up later to see if I can get the latest version to work.

Once again thank you for this excellent forum.

Thanks

Hi Bob
I'd be pretty confident you will want the x64, but it will depend on your system.  To check (assuming Windows 10):
  • Right clip the start button  (bottom lef of screen)
  • Left click “System”
  • Under the “Device Specifications” you should see “System Type”
  • if you see something like "64-bit operating system, x64-based processor" then x64 is what you need.

Thank you Robbie, that's what I thought but it was worth checking.
