How to Convert Video into Different Video Codecs and Formats

In this tutorial I explain why you sometimes need to convert video into different codecs and formats and I also show how to do a conversion.

Today there are a large number of different Video Codecs and Formats being used to record video to. In simple terms it means that many different languages are being used. So if you are doing video editing with Sony Movie Studio Platinum or Sony Vegas Pro, you may find that sometimes you cannot import a video into the program or it may not work properly at all. The reason this occurs is that not all programs can read and understand every single video codec (language) and format in use today. When this happens it means you will have to Convert your Video file into a different Video Codec/Format that Movie Studio or Vegas can read - a friendly codec that the program can understand.

Common Errors that Indicate a Video Codec or Format is not Compatible

Movie Studio or Vegas brings up an error message saying that the file format is not supported.
The program just crashes when you attempt to Import your video.
You can Import the video file, but when you drag the video onto the timeline the Video track is there, but the Audio track is missing.
You can Import the video file, but when you drag the video onto the timeline the Audio track is there, but the Video track is missing.
When you start to play back the video, you may see crazy coloured pixelation jumping all over the video in the Preview Window.
When you start to play the video, the audio is distorted or it keeps cutting in and out

Do you have Apple Quicktime installed ?

Apple Quicktime must be installed on the same computer you have Movie Studio or Vegas Pro installed on. This is a prerequisite of both programs and is listed in the minimum requirements. Apple Quicktime is needed in case you are working with Apple Video Codecs and Formats. This applies to all versions of Movie Studio 13 an older and Vegas Pro 13 and older. Vegas Pro 14 no longer requires Quicktime and hopefully the same will be true when Movie Studio 14 is released.

Important update about Apple Quicktime

Apple has dropped support for Quicktime on Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 computers. If you try to install the latest version of Quicktime 7.7.9 on Windows 10/8.1, it will not work. The solution is to install Quicktime 7.6, which will work.

If you are still using Windows Vista or Windows 7, Quicktime 7.7.9 should work OK for you. If you experience any problems at all, the best solution is to install Quicktime 7.6.

April 2016 - Security vulnerability announced about Quicktime

In April 2016, some security vulnerabilities were discovered in Apple Quicktime.

There is no need to panic about this development. From all the available information that I have read, the problem is only with the actual Quicktime player and not with the codecs that get installed with QT. The security flaws can only be activated if you tried to play a .mov video file in QT that is infected. Editing with .mov video files in Vegas Pro and Movie Studio will not infect your computer. All you have to do is STOP playing videos with Quicktime and use a different media player. If you are super worried, delete the quicktimeplayer.exe file from your computer and then nothing bad can happen.

Solutions: How to Convert a Video

Now this is where it can get very interesting and frustrating at times.

There are a large number of Video Converting programs available - some are free and some cost money. Many of the free versions can be very dodgy and inconsistant. The only way to find out what is a good converter is to do lots of experiments. If you have ever used Google Translate, then you will know that it can sometimes create hilarious and non-sensical translations from one language into another. So keep this in mind when you convert your videos. Your results may vary quite a bit depending on the quality of the original source video and how the converter interprets the file.

Media Converter by Arcsoft - this program is no longer available !
Nero Recode which is part of Nero 12 Platinum
Any Video Converter - free version
GoPro Studio

In the video tutorial below, I use Any Video Converter to show two different formats I often use to convert my videos to. However I must stress that many times I am forced to use the other programs above, when a conversion does not work properly.

Common Errors after Conversion and a BIG tip !

The most common error I see that indicates the video has not converted properly, is Audio Sync issues. Which means the converted video has fallen out of synchronization with the Audio Track. When this happens, the converted video is useless and means that you should then try an alternate video converter OR try a different Video Codec/Format to convert to.

If you watch the video tutorial right to the end, you will see another example of a strange error that can occur to a converted video. Sometimes it will repeat the video track twice on the top layer. If this happens you can just trim off the duplication in your video editor.

The most important thing to take note of before you start a conversion, is to find the frame rate of the original video and make sure the profile you are about to convert to has the same identical frame rate set in the controls. I have found that doing this reduces the chances of audio sync issues.

This post is sort of old. Are you still using Any Video Converter? My Norton said it was safe at first but when it was trying to install something Norton said it was unsafe. Are you still using Nero Recode or any other free or purchase product? I am converting an MP3 audio recorder file to MP4 to use with my video. It seems to take quite awhile and had errors. Are the purchased products generally faster and have less errors?

  Any Video Converter is a safe program!
  Norton is overly aggressive in what it considers "un-safe" - they do this all the time and cause unnecessary worry. I am literally using Any Video Converter right now.
  I have a collection of different Video Converters, because they don't always work with every file you through at them. In 2020 I am using Handbrake to do 99% of my video conversions, because it produces the BEST quality video.
  I am a bit confused with what you are trying to do?
  You can't convert an .mp3 into an .mp4, because there is no video component in an .mp3 file.
  Can you re-explain exactly what and why you are trying to do?

  I am likely not sure what I am doing either. I had 3 cameras shooting one thing, all Cannons. The A camera is 29.970 fps video and 31.250fps audio, B & C cameras are newer and are 59.940 frame rate for video and 46.875fps audio. I had an audio recorder positioned in the area as well and its frame rate was 38.281. Of course the bit rate and sampling rates for the camera and the audio recorder differ too.
  
  Anyway.... the A camera had a failure and I had to pick up with the B or C camera which were shooting at the same time but in different positions. There was a brief hiccup in sound. I was hoping to use the audio recorder sound bytes to fill in the gaps but it seems it might be on slightly different settings than the cameras. Not really understanding the settings and if they play well together I looked into file type hoping it might get them closer. I don't know if that change does any compressing or what. I read an earlier entry on the MSZ Forum about my 29.97 and 59.940 frame rates not being ideal to put together but the fact that one is divisible by the other means they should work together. (or something to that affect).
  
  I guess first question is will the audio file even work in this instance with the video footage and the second question is do I even need to convert the audio file type. This says my reply is too long so look for media info for the A camera, B camera, C camera, and the audio file in the next reply. If you think this is better answered on the MSZ Forum maybe we could transfer it all there. Thanks!

my issue is not audio sync (which means you have at least got audio) . I have no sound at all in my converted .mpg videos which are visually perfect - its jut no sound. I used a converter app called DVD vob2mpg. Can anyone suggest which sound codec to use for this app specifically as the app is fast and gives good visual results so dont want to use another converter app. thanks

  The files probably have "encryption", which blocks anyone from playing/downloading them, outside of the "terms of service" for this website. I really can't help you anymore with this one, because I don't use websites like this. Most streaming websites do not allow anyone to do what you are trying to do.

Thank you for this valuable information. But there is a little problem when converting a video to mp4 with Any video converter, it doesn’t keep the audio. Any thoughts on what else I could check to fix this. I used to convert video with Acethinker Video Converter, never had that problem.

i really need help. I filmed a video on my digital camera and using the footage i edited it on windows movie maker and it was completely fine. but while i saving the movie i accidentally deleted the footage i filmed and the movie obviously couldnt save completely with the missing footage. I tried to recover my footage using recuva and i found the files. but something changed in the files codec or video extension that for some reason it cant be played. it was originially called MVI_1320.MOV and the recovered file was called _VI_1320.MOV but it doesnt play. I need this file back desperately i dont know much about tech stuff and i was hoping you could help me asap. thank you so much for your time.

  It sounds like it is too late to recover your video file properly. It would only take a small part of the file to be missing, to cause a massive problem that can't be fixed.
  There are 2 things you can try.
  #1. Try re-naming the recovered file and changing the file extension to .mp4. Sometimes changing a .mov video to .mp4, will make it work. If that trick does not work, simply rename the file back to filename.mov
  #2. See if the file will play in different Media Players. If it won't play back in any media player, there is nothing you can do to fix it. If it does still play back in a Media Player, I suggest you try converting the video using a Video Conversion app and convert to .mp4. This is different to suggestion #1, because this time you will be rendering a new video, not just renaming it.

Hi. I'm trying to edit footage from a nikon 7100 on Vegas 9 platinum. Both older pieces of equipment but its good for my son to learn basic with. Anyway I purchased idealshare software and have used it to convert the footage to various formats. However when I try to import the converted footage it still crashes the same, no matter what format I convert to. Does this mean there's an issue with the codec. When the footage converts, is the codec not changing?

  Your version of Movie Studio is quite old now and was known to have some problems with it. If you are not using the final build version that was released, that would explain your problems. You must make sure it is Build 90b. Open Vegas and go to Help/About Vegas - this will tell you what version you have installed. If it is not 90b, download and install from here:
