*UPDATE as of August 2012*

An bug has crept into Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 which creates an error when you render to Sony AVC .mp4 using the settings I show in this tutorial.

I have made a new updated tutorial which will show you a solution to this problem. Please press this link now for NEW tutorial.

In this video tutorial a show you how to set up Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 to Create and Render 480p 16:9 Widescreen SD (Standard Definition) Video for YouTube.

Creating a 480p Video is best suited for anyone who is shooting with an older style Standard Definition Video Camera.

To get your 480p Widescreen Video looking fantastic there are two steps involved:

Firstly you have to set your Project Property Settings correctly. Many Video Cameras or DSLR Cameras all shoot with different settings - like different frame rates and whether it is Progressive or Interlaced Video. It is important to know where you want your finished product to be displayed, because this determines which settings you choose in the Project Properties.

Secondly you have to create a Rendering Template to match your Project Properties. Vegas gives you many great templates with which to work with, but a few settings may need to be tweaked to get the best look. Follow along with my video tutorial and you can't go wrong.

These instructions are specifically for Version 11 users of Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11, because the rendering screen is displayed differently in this version compared to V10 and V9.

Follow this link to my older tutorial on how to Render 480p Video if you are using the older Vegas Movie Studio Version 10 and 9:

Years after your post, I needed to put some videos from a DVD on YouTube. I found this after about pulling my hair out and it was a perfect solution. I made an 854x720p template from the Apple 720p version. Many thanks for taking time to create these videos, Derek.

    Hi Zen

Thanks, helped a lot have been looking for descent youtube settings. I am on Pal system and have the latest vegas studio movie platinum build 295. Followed everything you did, but the video size always changes to 864 x 480 after it renders. Any reason for this?

Which Video Codec/Template did you use ?
      mp4 or wmv ?
What frame size did you key in for Project Properties ?
What frame size did you key in for Render As - Customize settings ?
You didn't press "Upload to YouTube" inside Vegas did you ?

The quickest way to work this out is to email me some screen shots of your Projects Properties and ALL rendering windows.
I made a video showing how to do this:
