Solved SV Pro 12 Crashes Constantly

I'm using Vegas Pro 12 for about the last 8-10 months. This computer is a dedicated editing station. All drivers have been currently updated. Windows 7 itself is running at best capacity - it rates 7.8 out of a possible 7.9 rating. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the computer. It has the fastest of speed, RAM, a great graphics card etc (this computer was built expressly for editing). I run no other programs while editing, And Sony Vegas Pro 12 crashes - simply Stops Working - doing any number of functions. I can be simply watching the Video Preview and it stops. There's nothing I can do except close everything and restart...and hope I can get more editing done before it crashes again. Sometimes the screen goes to 'white' and stops working, other times while watching Video Preview, the video stops any action and the audio keeps going. Again, it needs to be shut down completely and re-started.

Does anyone else have this or these kinds of problems with Pro 12?

When I used Studio Suite 11, there were no where near the problems I have with Pro 12. I think my version of Pro 12 has come with a little bit of the devil -

I'm reluctant to get the Pro 13 Upgrade to simply encounter more and/or different editing problems.

We've actually considered dumping this entire (expensive) editing station and going over to a MAC Pro - but that would just have it's own new learning curve and problems.

If anyone is also having these crashing issues, please speak up...and what have you done to correct them.

Hi there

I have never seen Vegas Pro 12 behave in this way before or have other people report this kind of thing.
I have been using Vegas Pro 12 since it was released to make all my videos and have not experienced the problems you are describing.
The first thing I would do as a general tonic, is to do a complete program reset. This will restore all settings to default values and clean the Vegas cache. Sometimes if the cache becomes corrupted, it can do weird things.

Do this:
Turn Movie Studio/Vegas Off.
Hold down CONTROL and SHIFT keys at the same time AND ALSO AT THE SAME TIME double click program icon to Boot program.
Window will pop up.
Select Delete Cache and Yes.
This will restore program to Factory Default Settings.

What Model Graphics Card are you using ?
Do you have it turned ON or OFF in the Vegas Preference settings ?
Do you have any third party Video Effects plugins installed with Vegas ?
Have you installed in third party codec packs on your computer like K-Lite Codec Pack ? If you have, then please un-install them immediately - these types of things destroy Vegas.
When you are just watching the Preview Window and nothing else, what exact type of video are you playing back ? Where did it come from ? File extension ?

Diagnosing problems like this is a slow process of elimination.
If you have already checked all possibilities, I would be inclined to do a clean install of Windows 7 on your computer and start fresh. This would be the only way to remove any possible un-known quantity. I actually did this myself once when Vegas Pro started acting up out of the blue. I pinned it down to a program I had installed that had damaged the Windows Registry.

Regards
Derek.

Hi Derek,
Thanks for you quick reply.
I have done as you've suggested with the General Tonic and reset the default values. Thanks for these instructions.

The Graphics card is Gigabit GeForce GTX 660 GC 2GB 192-bit - and I've updated the drivers just before writing the first post (Vegas still stopped working after that).
The Graphics card is turned ON.

I have New Blue plugins but that is the only one - don't have any of the ones you name.

When watching the Preview window, all our current footage is shot in HD from a Sony EX1R Video camera. The crashing can occur whether I'm watching new footage, or in the case of the DVD I'm editing, some of the files are already rendered, so are mpg4, & wmv, files.

It's not only while watching video preview - the crashing can also occur while performing many/any different editing functions.

Thanks so much Derek for any additional guidance you might be able to offer. (We're glad to see you back up and feeling much healthier - Glenda & Wes)

Try turning the Graphics Card OFF in the Preference settings and see what happens.

If you still experience problems after this, then I am out of ideas.
There must be something unique about your computer which is causing the problem, because Vegas Pro 12 runs beautifully on my Windows 7 machine.

The best way for you to move forward is post your problem on the official Sony Vegas Pro Forum at Sony Creative Software.
Also search this forum - you may find other people with the same problem.
Because a large number of only Vegas Pro users, use this forum - you should have a much better chance of finding some info.

The other best place to post your problem is on the Creative Cow Vegas Pro Forum.
This Forum is run by Vegas Pro Professional Editors and they know every trick in the book.
This is the place I go myself for all the most difficult problems.

Where ever you end up posting this problem, make sure to include all the best information you have told me - like what Graphics Card you have, Operating System..........

Derek :)
