How to Speed Up or Slow Down Video using Sony Vegas Movie Studio

In this video tutorial I show how to Speed Up or Slow Down Video using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.

I also show you how to "glue" together many pieces of video to create a single video that you can then slow down or speed up as one group.

Sometimes you need to Speed Up video way past 400%. So I show you my method for achieving that.

Update August 2013

Hi Derek,

I did what you said - or at least I think I did - but the colors just got even stronger at every time I did that method. I was about to speed up a sunrise and the quality got very poor.

What could be the problem, please?

  Right after I have done the renderimg in new track, it has stronger colors, but in really bad quality. It got wors and wors right after one another.

  This problem has nothing to do with speeding up or slowing down the video.
  It is because of the way you are rendering and not having colour correction added to the project. To explain how to fix this may require more room than what is available in the comments section. Please post your problem on the MSZ Forum and I can help you with the solution. Please also let me know which exact version of Vegas you are using and which output preset and template you are using to render with.

  back again. So I'm using a Vegas Pro 13. Shoots are eith GoPro 4 Silver. 720HD 120fps. Rendering in Internet HD 720, than Costumize template...HD720 1280x720, I do not allow source to adjust frame size, Profile: Main, Frame rate: 29,970(NTSC), here at the second time allow source to adjust frame size is ticked, so allowed, Field order: None (Progressive scan), pixel aspect ration: 1,0000, number of reference frames: 2 Constant bit rate: 10000, enable progressive download.

Is there a way to have gradual changes in playback speed?
Just like how you can program in volume changes manually.
Is there any way to do that in Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13?

  That feature is only available in Vegas Pro, through the use of the [b]Velocity Envelope[/b] tool. It is not available in any of the Movie Studio versions.

I have a video clip recorded at 30 fps. When I try to make it faster by holding control and dragging left, the end product is very choppy. How can I make it smooth?

  I have a different tutorial that explains how to speed up or slow down video more accurately. You can only speed up a video clip so far and then it will start to look like it is jumping around. Try using this alternate method.

May be great video but the view I see is blurred so I can't really see what menu item you are clicking on.
I've been viewing some other vids and they seem to be clearer than this so I don't believe its my computer nor browser.
IS this supposed to be watched in a certain definition setting?

  Hi Dave
  I can't control what your YouTube video player does. All my videos are recorded in 1080p HD.
  You must manually change the YouTube player to 1080p HD before you start viewing the video.
  As soon as you press play and after the ad plays (if one appears), press Pause and then press the Cog Icon so you can set it to 1080p manually.
  If you press the Fullscreen icon, the YT Video Player is meant to Automatically change the playback quality to 1080p. However, most people find that the player has a mind of it's own and quite often will stay stuck on 360p unless you change it yourself.

  Remember to regularly delete/clear out your web browsers internet history - especially the cookies. Over time garbage can build up inside the web browser which makes sites like YouTube do strange things.

Hi... I love your tutorials but I've been having a hard time trying to use the DVD Architect for BD burning. After following step by step your tutorial of rendering Audio and Video seperatly (Without missing any step) trough Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11. And when I import this archives to DVD Architect, then I double click to send to the time-line (in DVD Architect), it only move to the timeline the video OR audio, never both. Please help.
