Solved Thoughts on a build spec

Hi All
Earlier this year I was looking into a PC build. At the time parts prices were seen as crazy. I didn't get round to it, but now I am able to justify it and willing to spend a bit more. I want an adequately powerful machine and can't justify putting time into building it myself. How does this look for a 4k/6k/8k editing machine?

Hi Paul

I don't have time for a lengthy reply, however here are my thoughts.

1. Get the latest AMD 5800X instead of older generation 3700X.
The 5800X is faster than the 3700X and more efficient at full load processing, like rendering video.
Remember that when rendering video, 100% of the CPU will be used.
I personally built a new computer at the beginning of 2021 and used a 5800X - it is a very good processor!!!
3700X is OK if you're trying to save money, but it isn't as good as 5800X.

2. You don't need a RAID setup!
RAID storage for video editing was only necessary back when we only used spinning Hard Disc Drives.

I would recommend you use M.2 SSD drives instead of SATA connected SSD drives.
M.2 SSD drives will give you high bandwidth and high speed transfer rates, for editing with 4K and higher video.
This is vastly superior to using RAID with SATA connected SSD drives.

Use one M.2 SSD for your C-Drive and a second M.2 SSD as your "scratch/temporary" drive when editing large video files.

Here is a good range of different M.2 SSDs from an Australian website.
In my computer I used Samsung EVO drives.
There are cheaper brands than Samsung as well.
Samsung 970 EVO can read/write up to 3,500 / 3,300 MB/s  - this is much, much faster than what you would get by using standard SSDs in RAID.

3. I would also recommend getting a slightly higher capacity Power Supply Unit.
650W or 750W would be more appropriate.
Especially if your using the latest Nvidia GPUs, which are power hogs!!!
If you don't have enough power, it could cause random computer shut downs.

That's about it.
When I built my new computer, it took me 4 hours from beginning to end, with Windows 10 installed.
Make sure you install Windows 10 and not Windows 11 !!!
Windows 11 is still not good enough for everyday use.

Regards
Derek
