Hi There,

I am following Derek's urgings and will be burning my first project using Blu-ray discs. I am also following his recommendation of trying re-writable discs first to test the burns.

Age-old question, which brand of blue-ray media (discs) would be a good investment for re-writing and final burning? I have learned through experience that double-sided Verbatim blank DVD's work well and have had a tough time with the same format from Memorex not working in that application

I use the term "investment" since the local brick-and-mortar stores here in Northern California, USA sell them for a range between $2.00 - $5.00 US per disc!
My current project is comprised of lots of video and photos I shot during the 2015 Holidays. Thus I will have multiple discs and will be making several copies for my family. I would like to keep the expense reasonable.

Any tips would be very helpful.

Thanks kindly.

Hi Papablue,

I too have had the same issues you mentioned with Memorex discs in the past. Verbatim for me have typically been very good to me, both DVD and Blu-Ray. I have used them on Asus, LG, and Lite-On burners with really good results (Verbatim discs that is). Heck, I even had a bad time using Memorex discs using three different Memorex burners, one being external. I don't use re-writable much, since I just found the hard way of using Verbatim. I have used the "cheapo" ones from Staples in the bulk packs (DVD), and even had good success with Optical Quantum Blu-Ray's from Newegg. Though I still prefer Verbatim, and since I still have an HP PhotoSmart All-in-One C5250 inkjet that is working under Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit, and using Sure Thing Label Maker, I can print to those Verbatim discs! Oh the pain it will be when that printer goes to the great Technology Cemetery in the sky! :(
One bit of advice if you don't subscribe to the line of thought is that something I found out early on when burning discs years ago...Turn Off Your Screensaver Before You Start Burning! Some programs still have "issues".
If I was going to utilize re-writable discs for testing any burns, I would probably utilize Verbatim. But like I said, I've gone through a lot of bulk packs over the years starting with CD-R's (most of the CD-RW's I tried all seemed to "give up the ghost" after a couple of re-writes, so stopped using them), the issue originally with DVD-R/DVD+R discs and a "compatible" consumer player, through Blu-Rays', and have just been pleased overall with Verbatim. Will always have a "coaster" once in a while, but I try to replicate what I did, to ensure that it wasn't some setting, screensaver, etc. that didn't cause the issue in the first place. Basically one reason why I also buy the Bulk Packs. Yeah, sort of like not paying attention to Dr. Zen's advice while burning a disc in Architect Pro or Studio, and then finally going back to his video on burning and realizing that I didn't pay attention to the proper format or the Size of the project and what disc was in the burner! Doah! It's great to be Human after all!

Hi Papablue and Mike

Thanks Mike for answering this question.
I also use Verbatim Blu-ray BD-RE Re-writable discs and they have never let me down, so these are what I recommend for re-writables.

Because of the massive mark-up that bricks and mortar stores put of specialist products like re-writable Blu-ray discs, I always buy my discs online.
There are some very good eBay stores in most countries that offer much better prices than physical stores. So this is where I recommend you purchase your discs from. Before I buy from any eBay store, I always read/check the feedback left by previous buyers and that can pretty much gaurantee you will get a good product.

For permanent Blu-ray discs (non re-writables), I have been experimenting with different brands of which a can't remember right now. If you can, buy small packs and test first. If they work well, then go back and buy a large economy pack.

And Amazon is always worth a look as well.

I've tended to use Sony's own DVD-R for all my work (which has all been SD) over the past many years and have never had a problem (touch wood --- Don't want to tempt fate!) although I guess they may well have been made by someone else. I used Verbatim once, a long time ago, but wasn't too impressed although I can't remember why now!

Hi mmcswnavy24 (Mike), Richard and Derek,

Thank you very much for the tips about Blu-ray and DVD media. I followed each one and ordered some Verbatim small packs from ebay here in California to start. Both BD-RE and -R. And I am also checking into Amazon as well.

This helped me a great deal.

Kindest regads.
