Answer to Eric's question: fade had no effect. I did a full reset and the fade to black is now restored. I would like to know what the setting error was I can avoid future troubles...

...well, glad you got it worked out. I have no idea what or why the fade in stopped working other than the application data confused Vegas and you now have the fix if it gets messed up again in the future. Perhaps it was one of the 'Twilight Zone' things that Derek refers to, we may never know what or why, but are thankful it is fixed and proceed down the editing road to success!
