So, with everything going on concerning our Magix Overlords...

Did a test to help some figure out possibly if their computer is too slow/old, upgrade, replace, etc.

Two files from my nephews wedding in December: 1. 45 Second .mts file at 1920x1080x29.970 from a Panasonic HC-V100K camcorder
2. 10 Min 42 Sec .mvi file at 1920x1080x29.970 from a Canon EOS Rebel T5i camera

First computer is the one listed in my profile, running at stock speeds, so basically ramps to around 3.7 GHz on two cores, the other 4 around 3.5 GHz
Second computer basically the same with an I7-5930K, but this guy is overclocked to 4.0 GHz on all cores

Computer 1 I have both ver. 13 & 14 Movie Studio Suite. Computer 2 I use Vegas Pro 14. All the clips were used as is with only a slight Brightness & Contrast fx, and the volume was lowered about -10.0db. Depending on the version/computer, the timeline length was 11:26 to 11:28 (min:sec).

Here we go: Test 1 Computer 1 render to Main Concept AVC version 13 1920x1080x23.976p at 25Mbps - 26 min. 18 sec.
Test 2 Computer 1 render to Main Concept AVC version 14 1920x1080x23.976p at 25 Mbps - 28 min. 57 sec.
Test 3 Computer 1 render to Main Concept AVC version 14 1920x1080x29.970 at 25 Mbps - 33 min. 09 sec.
Test 4 Computer 2 render to Main Concept AVC Vegas Pro 14 1920x1080x23.976p at 25 Mbps - 22 min. 25 sec.

For kicks, I also did a render with HitFilm 4 Express using the clips above and also going to 1920x1080x23.976p at 20 Mbps (only option for me was .mp4) done on Computer 1 - 19 min. 21 sec. Forgot that unless you have either the "packs/add-ons" for Express or use the Pro version, you are limited with export.

I do not have an AMD Ryzen system to test against. Both computers use a PCI-Express nvme drive for boot, an nvme PCI-Express drive for source footage, and I exported out to an SSD. Computer 1 has 32GB of RAM, #2 has 64GB, but doubt that had any bearing on the test since the clips were actually pretty short and no mass amount of FX applied to the video portions. Did verify each and every time that "disable resample switch" was off for the video, and made sure to change the project render quality on the project tab to "best".

Hope this helps a little. Since I do not have a Ryzen system, the only thing I can say is if you have a processor that is able to be overclocked, along with a compatible motherboard, and you have sufficient cooling for the processor AND system, there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube. I think even Derek did a slight one on his computer build from 2011, though I have not watched that build series since he put his rig together. If you are planning to build new, don't cheap out. I keep wanting to upgrade my Computer #2 which I built in September 2014, but that is more the "want" and not "need" factor. :)

Hey All,

Was scouring the net again in search of answers between comparisons of AMD and Intel for video editing, primarily utilizing Vegas Pro. Here's a link I found, of all places, at VegasCreativeSoftware:

www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/ryzen1800x-slow-choppy-editing--106115/

Still trying to decide what to use my Tax Refund money for, hence all the research. Mildly pleased with using the Asus Strix RX 480 8G OC model in my other computer, though for the few games I play on that guy, the video card is pretty much a dud, especially running an LG 3440x1440 34 inch monitor! The computer I am on now, listed in profile, using an MSI GTX 1070, seems to do everything fine, running two Samsung 28 inch 4K monitors.

Also, having mixed bag results with Vegas Pro/Movie Studio 14 on these two computers. Seems that trying to render using the Sony AVC format, even if it its correctly to the desired disc, the file never seems to render out completely (even Media Info has issues trying to read the file), making bringing into DVD Architect a nightmare. Still finding some other issues during rendering, and having to go back and re-render a project due to size, even when using Main Concept AVC mpeg-2 format. More testing to be done! :(
