I have tried without success to apply Stabilize Image to a clip but in spite of trying all options the finished version is to large to view and appears to be about 4 or 5 times too large. Have you produced a tutorial on this, Derek ? Perhaps you can advise how to correct the settings.
Many thanks.

Hi durrow

I am not a fan of the Image Stabilizer at all.
I am a fan of tripods !
No I have not made any tutorials about this - sorry.

I don't think this plugin works very well if your video is very shaky.
It works best when you only apply a small amount of stabilization.
For Stabilization to work, it actually has to Zoom In on the image, to create the illusion of stillness.
So the worse your original image is, the more it has to zoom in.

The one tip I can give, is that if you have a long video and only part of it is shaky, it would be best to cut that section and isolate it first. Then apply the Stabilizer to only that part. Then you can edit it back into the main video.

Regards
Derek.

Thanks for the prompt reply Derek.

Like you, I always use a tripod but on this occasion a young lad knocked it at an important part of a religious service I was recording for a family member. The tripod rocked and I had to catch it to prevent it from falling over, hence the need to use the Stabilizer. I fully agree that it is a waste of time. From now on I'll revert to my trusty Monfretto, but as camcorders are getting smaller by the year, it tends to look out of place.

I had something similar happen to me last year.
I was videotaping my Grandmother's 100th birthday party. During the speeches a kid decided to jump right in front of the camera.
So I cut in another piece of video I had shot separately of Grandma and placed it on a new Video Track above the main video. I applied a quick fade in and a slow pan to the inserted video section, which only had to last 30 seconds to cover up the "kid" section. The audio did not have to be changed - it just kept rolling.

That's exactly what I did. I used a few of the church artefacts that I'd shot the previous day when I went to survey the site. These were faded in and out at various points especially at the critical point I mentioned. The noise on the audio track made by the moving tripod will be eliminated on Sound Forge. If time allows, a visit to the event site is always a useful thing to do. I was shooting this in Germany and had never been to a church of this Faith before. It was a church in a very rural area that dated back to the 1600's. It was small and cramped and space was very limited but a space for the tripod was agreed with the Pastor. However on the day he told me he wanted the tripod space as he and his son had decided to sing a religious folk song in that area. Hence a lot of stuff had also to be shot on a second hand held Panasonic X900 HD. I only wish he had stayed in the same area instead of wandering up and down the aisle :-)
