How to create 9:16 Portrait Style videos with Movie Studio Platinum 13 was created by ppaul3
Posted 20 Mar 2022 07:38 #1 Although I've made many videos for my music albums, my knowledge is very minimal. A shallow understanding of too many tasks . Trying to make my vids uploaded to Instagram. Must be MP4. I've been successful, but by accident. I see no setting for aspect ratio anywhere in MS 13. I can't find where to adjust aspect ratio (It would be nice if MS 13 had a setting for Instagram like it does for Facebook. I tried using Vegas 19 with trial to see if it would work but the silly site said I can't use it until I register and get code. BUT, I can't register unless I enter code. Silly). ANYWAY, I don't think Vegas 19 has setting for Insta. Only Twitter and Twitch. How can I change aspect ratio in MS 13? I know it must be in Advanced area but I don't even see a box called aspect ratio that I can change. I know this is probably my ignorance. Can anyone help? Many thanks !!!! BTW, I have no objection to buying Vegas 19, but wanted to make sure I wouldn't run into the same issue. . Attaching two screen shots 1. shows where I can select templates (Don't know which to choose for 9:16 ratio 1080 x 1920) that is good for their IGTV videos aand Instagram stories. Carousal video ads must have aspect ratio of 1:1 and 1080 x 1350 . MANY MANY THANKS for any feedback paul

Posted 20 Mar 2022 13:28 #2 Hi Paul
When you request the trial version for Vegas Pro, you need a temporary License Key for the program to work - it's been like that for a long time now.
All the Tools you need for change the Frame Size and Aspect Ratio of your video are available in all versions of Vegas, including v13.
Recently another forum member asked a similar question about making Portrait Style (long and skinny) 9:16 videos.
My reply will provide you with the instructions you need, to create 9:16 videos - it's actually quite easy to do.

Posted 26 Mar 2022 02:17 #3 Yeah, I got it but didn't understand. You may have been talking about changing a format of a finished video? Not sure. I'm rendering from scratchI also didn't understand how setting the size in properties might be affected because when I render mp4 it says it is going to render in a completely different size (Hitting the "Make Movie" icon thing. My ignorance is difficult for many to understand (That have experience). I'll figure something out on my own. Maybe after I rest a bit. Just not getting it. Someday it will come to me or I'll find a program that just has a feature like "Save for instagram" No worries
PS: In order to use the Vegas trial Magix makes me use a code, but I can't get the code until I register. I can't register as I need the code to go to the next step. Just clarifying. No need to respond. I'm gonna walk away as my brain needs rest

Posted 26 Mar 2022 11:22 #4 Downloading Free Trials
You cannot skip the first step.
1. You must create (register) a MAGIX account if you want to download a free trial, upgrade or buy a program.
That is standard practice for all software companies. If you don't want to create an account, then that is the end of the road - you can't do anything without an account.
2. After you have created (registered) a free MAGIX account, then you can get the trial version.
You will be emailed a temporary License Key, so you can use the free Trial version.
How to create 9:16 Portrait Style videos with Movie Studio Platinum 13
Are your original videos recorded as 9x16 Aspect Ratio "Portrait Style" or are they 16x9 Aspect Ratio "Landscape Style".
Examples:
Portrait Style = 1080x1920
Lanscape Style = 1920x1080
I am guessing this is the cause of your problems.
The instructions will be different, depending on what type of videos you are importing.
What is the Frame Size of the original videos, you want to render as Portrait Style (long and skinny) ?
What is the Width ?
What is the Height ?
Here are all the steps - no steps are skipped in my instructions !!!
I have re-installed Movie Studio Platinum 13 on my own computer, so that all the screen shots look the same as what you will be seeing.
Step 1
Import all your videos into Movie Studio Platinum 13 and don't worry if the Preview Window doesn't look correct.
Step 2
Open Project Properties windows (cog is above Preview window)
Set Width = 1080
Set Height = 1920
Field Order = Progressive
Your Frame Rate needs to be set to the same Frame Rate your source videos were recorded with.
To find frame rate, go to Project Media window, select a video and the read out below will tell you.
You can give your Template a custom name and then press SAVE button.
Next time you do a project, select this template from Template drop down list.
Step 3
If your original videos were recorded in Portrait Style (long & skinny), you can skip directly to Step 4 and render your video.
If your original videos were recorded in Landscape Style (widescreen), you will need to convert them into Portrait Style (long & skinny).
Converting Landscape to Portrait style
On each Video Track you have videos on, you need to activate the Track Motion window. This will re-size and re-position your videos.
Press Track Motion button and then drag corner of window to make as large as you need.
You will probably have to re-size the Track Motion window when it opens.
Drag a corner to make bigger.
If your videos were 1080x1920, you can set the Width as 3420, and it will automatically re-size the entire window.
To see what is inside of the Track Motion window more clearly, click inside and use the wheel on your mouse to zoom in/out.
To select a different section of a Landscape video, turn on Prevent Movement (Y), then drag video frame left or right - you will see a change in the Preview Window.
Step 4 - Rendering your video
Select Make Movie / Save to my Hard Drive
Then select Advanced Options
Select Format = MainConcept AVC/AAC
Select Template = Internet HD 1080p
Make sure you set the Output Folder Location correctly, so you know where to find your rendered videos.
Now press the Customize button
Set Frame Size = Custom frame size
Set Width = 1080
Set Height = 1920
Set Profile = High (best quality)
Make sure the Frame Rate matches the same Frame Rate your videos were recorded with.
Name new Template at top of window and press SAVE button - then you can use this in the future.
Press OK at bottom.
Now you can finally press the Render button - that's it !!!
Location of Custom Templates
When you create and save Custom Templates, they will appear at the bottom of the Template list.
Please let me know how you go.
You must complete the first step, before the second step.PS: In order to use the Vegas trial Magix makes me use a code, but I can't get the code until I register. I have never heard of anyone having problems with getting trial versions, so I can't help with how to fix it.
Suggestions for getting this trial version problem fixed:
1. Contact Support
www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/support/interview/
2. If you have a 2nd email address, use that to download trial.
