Yes provided the later versions are VEGAS Movie Studio versions. VMS was discontinued at version 17. Later Movie Studio versions are Magix Movie Studio based on Magix Movie Edit Pro. They will not properly open old VMS "vf" files.
Also be aware that if you used Third Party plug-ins they may not be usable in later versions. This is because they may be tied to the version they came with or because of Vegas changes in later versions. But you should not have problems with VMS's inbuilt FX, Transitions etc.

Eric,
Are you simply saying if I have an unfinished project that I have not yet rendered out of the old program (MSP13, MSP15), just project media and timeline things queued up, I cannot open it in anything later than MSP17? A .mp4 file created by rendering that project's edits out of the older program can be used in a newer version though, right? I understand it will be compressed more than the original content but that might be better than having to re-do all your edits in some cases. Not sure how plug-ins factor into that though. Maybe there is a better solution to have the least compression (not sure if that is the correct term) and still retrieve all your prior editing work to put it in a newer Vegas version.
Thanks!

I don't know how much of your original VMS project will correctly open in the "new" Magix Movie Studio. I gather it's just the clips and their cut points. You could download the 30 day trial to find out. But it's a different product with a learning curve and whilst it has some good features it doesn't appeal to me. For a start (unless it's recently changed) it has no project media pane which is important to me. I'm currently using VMS17 Platinum but intend giving Vegas pro 21 a try.
Yes the mp4 route should work but why not finish the projects in VMS15 or give Vegas Pro 21 a try. You should get the upgrade price. There's a link at the top of this forum.

Yes, VP21 has a Project Media pane now. It is a lot like MSP17 but with added features. For the most part you can just hop in and go because the UI is so similar. I am hoping to ignore all the fancy stuff and just do a simple edit to test for now. Maybe after this current project is done, I can delve into it further.
I'm just curious because I have several things, I started years ago but the video project stopped, and they are now being revisited. I did a lot of edits, and I don't want to lose those, but I need to move them to a newer, supported version with updated capabilities. Back then I wasn't using plug-ins much if ever so it's pretty clean but now I would and also effects the older versions don't have.
I was just looking over some forum answers to other things that Derek posted and saw where he suggested opening two instances of Movie Studio at the same time and cut/paste things to do tests. I'll try that, import the media files to media pane first, and see if moving timeline stuff over like that will ease the transition.
Thanks for your input.

I was talking about Magix Movie Studio when I said there's no Project Media Pane. To my knowledge Vegas Pro has always had one.
VP isn't really VMS17 with added features. It's the other way around. VMS was a cut down version of VP. VP should have no problems with your VMS 'vf' files other than TP FX plugins which might not work. You shouldn't need to have to copy and paste across. Derek's suggestion was probably in response to another problem.
Just open your 'vf' file in VP21 and you should be good to go.

Thanks Eric. The VP21 file extension is .veg but you still think it will open the .vf file? I'll give it a try.
