Movie Studio just freezes, no one can fix it so far :( was created by oukanna
Posted 09 Oct 2015 05:20 #2405I am really hoping someone has ideas on how to fix my issue
I got Movie Studio 13 and whenever i load in a video to edit, i can use all the buttons fine, however if i try to move the time slider so i can see in real time what part of the video is when (so i can make good cuts and all that jazz) the preview just freezes after a few seconds..i can still move the time slider, there is just no update in the preview window and sometimes it will just make the entire program white and say not responding at the top.
Hope that makes sense...so onto diagnostics...
I contacted support who gave me steps to take. This included:
- Re-installing
- Updating any driver i can find
- turning on GPU acceleration
- turning off GPU acceleration
- changing the allocated memory bit to various numbers
- changed the preview window to the lowest resolution possible
- I cant remember this next one as it was 6 months ago but i could click on the movie studio icon and it would reset all preferences.
- Installed movie studio onto a different windows profile
Also since my support tickets that keep closing on me after 72 hours, i have had more RAM another Graphics card (SLI now) and a new PSU (to power the SLI). Nothing has worked!
Just for info my setup is below:
I have AMD 8329 8 core- 3.5GHz CPU
16GB or RAM
2 x GeForce GTX 770
3 x HDD (1 ssd)
Windows 7 x 64bit
I appreciate any help

Posted 10 Oct 2015 12:10 #2410I only recommend people use the Platinum versions.
Here are my suggestions/thoughts.
#1. Reset the program and delete cache. This can sometimes fix weird problems and is like doing a clean install. It is safe to do.
Do this:
Turn Movie Studio Off.
Hold down CONTROL and SHIFT keys at the same time AND ALSO AT THE SAME TIME double click program icon on Desktop to Boot program.
Window will pop up.
Select Delete Cache and Yes.
This will restore program to Factory Default Settings.
#2. Download the free trial for Movie Studio Platinum 13 and then watch my beginners guide tutorial.
If it works, I would recommend you buy Movie Studio Platinum 13 or Movie Studio Suite 13 - both are on sale right now via banner ad on this website.

#3. SLI has no effect on Video Editing programs. All Video Editing programs can only use one Graphics Card at a time.
#4. Some videos can be very difficult to play, if they use certain codecs/formats.
Example = 4K video cannot be played directly in Movie Studio. It needs to be converted into a smaller Proxy Video file for easier playback and editing.
#5. You must Match your Media settings when you import videos, to make sure the Project Properties are set the same as the Video's Properties. If both are set to different Frame Rates, the program has to try and convert in real time which is almost impossible.
#6. If you have installed free Codec Packs on your computer, these can break Movie Studio. Never install these. They replace good quality codecs that come with Movie Studio and replace with dodgy ones. If you have done this, un-install Codec Packs and Movie Studio, then re-boot computer and then re-install Movie Studio.
#7. Where did your video come from ? What file extension is it using ?

- I have tried your option 1 a couple of times which made no difference sadly.
- I am hesitant to buy the platinum to resolve the issues of the normal one. It should work, i get what you mean though.
- I am not using 4k so thats ok

- SLI is fine, as long as it won't stop the software in any way.
- Point 5 and 6 i am unsure of...I use Action game-play to record my videos. They are AVI 1080p and 60fps. There is also a separate sound file i use which is a WAV file.
- If i remember i don't think i set up massively in movie studio, i tend to just click open and select what i want to edit and it loads in. As for codecs...i think i installed a video converter a while ago, to see if converting into a different format would work. I recently installed quicktime as some one said movie studio likes it (it seemed to improve slightly afterwards, not sure if that's my wishful thinking though).

Posted 11 Oct 2015 21:27 #2419#2. Use the Match Media function is critical to getting good play back while editing. If you don't get the Project Properties matched exactly to your 1080-60p video, everything is going to grind to a halt.
#3. Installing a video converter has nothing to do with free Video Codec packs - this is a different topic. There is no harm in having video converters installed.
#4. Apple Quicktime is a prerequisite for all Movie Studio and Vegas Pro programs. This is explained in Tech Specs for all programs. Quicktine is needed for decoding certain types of video. If you have it already installed, please keep it that way.

Posted 15 Oct 2015 11:39 #2436I just remembered something which may help you.
Other people have reported problems with the type of video Action! outputs - it doesn't seem to decode properly in some video editors.
Instead of recording to AVI 2.0 (FICV), try recording to MP4 (H.264/AVC) instead.
I think this will fix your problem.
Derek

Posted 16 Oct 2015 04:26 #2438Update: mp4 seems to work fine!!!!!! yaaaaaaaay
i can't believe it was just down to not liking AVI. Makes recording slightly awkward with audio but at least i can edit my videos when i convert them
Thank you for the help, im so happy
