regret quality of video not up to scratch  shot many years ago on DV format and not attempted since because of lack of success.
trying to ensure object of video remains in centre of frame as much as possiable

I wouldn't bother.  It's not that objectionable as you watch.  Tracking it to the centre would result in much cropping and loss of already poor quality.

What I would fix, with Levels FX and keyframe animation, is the exposure variation as you zoom in and out.

Allan - the original video is in too poor of a condition to try and do anything in regards to Motion Tracking.
It needs stabilization applied, however the video frame and resolution is TOO small, which means you would lose video during the process.
If it was 1920x1080p, then you could improve it a bit.

For future Allan, a nice tripod with a smooth moving tripod head would do the job nicely.
ℹ️ Remember to turn everything off at least once a week, including your brain, then sit somewhere quiet and just chill out.
