Solved Substitution of 1080p video with 4K video in VEGAS Pro 20

Hey Derek,

Hope you're well!

I'd like to know about substituting 1080p with 4K video in Vegas Pro 20.  This would be in regards to the video media bin where trimmed videos segments have been done from 1080p.  I'd like to replace the 1080p video quality with and importing 4k video so that the previous video segments will be the latter.  Can this be done without having to go back and trim all of the video segments from the 4k video source?

Thanks

Hi Keith

This is an interesting question.
If you have identical 1080p and 4K versions of the same videos, it will be easy to substitute one for the other.
The most important thing is to make sure your 1080p and 4K versions use the exact same file name!

There are different ways you can do the swap.
At a very simple level, VEGAS Pro does have a swap function built into the program.
In an existing project, go to the Project Media tab.
Find the first video you want to swap, right-click and select Swap Video Files.
Navigate to alternate video you want to use and select it - that's it.

My recommended method, so that you don't end up with a mess, is to use the same technique when working with Proxy video files.
If you planned this out in advance, create 2 folders for your source videos: "1080p" folder and "4K" folder.
Put all 1080p videos in 1080p folder; put 4K videos in 4K folder.
Make sure all files have identical names.
Close project.
Rename the 1080p folder (or whatever the original source file folder was called) by adding a suffix at the end of folder name, like: 1080p_old
Re-open VEGAS project
A pop-up window will now appear and say that your videos are missing and ask for an alternate file location.
Select Specify a new location and press OK

Navigate to the folder containing identical 4K versions and open it.
Select the first video in folder that is the same as first missing video (same file name).
In the next pop-up window, select Yes to All and VEGAS will automatically find and replace all further videos that are in your project.
That's it !

Now make sure to use the function File / Save As (not just Save).
Give this new version of the project a new name, so you know this is the 4K version.
Now that the videos are swapped, it will be important to adjust your Project Properties, to make sure  4K resolution 3840x2160 is selected, and not 1080p, otherwise VEGAS will just treat it as a 1080p project.
Another important thing to consider, is if you added any TEXT events when it was a 1080p project.
If you did add Text before swapping to 4K resolution, all your text will still be 1080p resolution.
You will have to manually open each Text event and enter the resolution of 3840x2160 at the top of the window.

Now that I am here, I will have to turn this reply into a new article on the website!

Regards
Derek
