Hi there,
I use VEGAS Pro 20 for editing and had to do a program reset, which has reset my preferences, so I have an issue with the audio (mp4 files). When I right click the audio file and select 'Open in Audio Editor' I have the message 'VEGAS Pro is currently using the media file(s) so they cannot be closed. Try stopping playback, stopping recording, and any external timecode synchronisation'. If I right click and select 'Open copy in Audio Editor', it open in the editor (I use Spectral Layers Pro 12), but after editing the audio file is not updated. I then tried using Sound Forge as well with the same result. Can anyone suggest what preferences I need to change to deal with this.

Thanks
BobH

Hi Bob

I used Sound Forge Pro to do a test and everything is working OK in VEGAS Pro 20.

1. I recommend you always open a copy of the audio file you want to edit in Spectral Layers Pro or Sound Forge Pro - this makes everything work smoothly.
2. Obviously you have already set your preferred audio editor in Options / Preferences / Audio - I mention this for anyone else that may read this in the future.
3. This should have no effect on saving audio files back into VEGAS Pro, but I always set my Preferred Audio Device Type = Windows Classic Wave Driver (go to Options / Preferences / Audio Device).
4. Right-click audio file on VEGAS Pro timeline and select Open Copy in Audio Editor. A .wav file version is now rendered and replaces the original audio file.
5. Sound Forge or Spectral Layers Pro will now open and show the new .wav audio file in place.
6. Edit audio file.
7. To get the audio file to automatically save changes back onto the VEGAS Pro timeline, inside of Sound Forge or Spectral Layers Pro, go to File / Save (not Save As).
As soon as you do that and go back to VEGAS Pro, you will see the audio waveform update. That's it.

It's that last step that makes all the difference.

Let me know if that works for you Bob.

p.s. I edited the title for this forum thread, to better reflect the actual problem.

Hello Derek and thank you for your prompt reply. I used your suggestion 'Audio Device Type = Windows Classic Wave Driver', which is what I usually use, but the reset set it to 'Microsoft Sound Mapper' and that was the issue. Now all working OK.

Thanks again, and I hope all is well with you.

Thanks for replying back with what worked for you. I use this technique of editing audio outside of VEGAS Pro myself, quite a lot.

I can't remember if I told you this before, but I had another operation on my head a week before Christmas last year, to completely replace the shunt in my brain, which was not working correctly and had become blocked. It was a complete re-do of the same operation I had 2 1/2 years ago, when something went wrong (that's another story). Long story short, that last surgery 8 months ago has finally made a dramatic improvement to my health. It's the first time in decades I've felt relatively normal and no longer get horrific headaches.

I will be relaunching my YouTube channel and website very, very soon. That means a return to regular weekly video tutorials and written articles here on the website. I have a deadline, so I've been working around the clock to get as much done as possible.

Regards, Derek.

Hello again Derek,

Yes you have posted before about this, and we are all so pleased that the latest surgery has gone well. It will be great to have you posting again with some new articles. We all appreciate your knowledge base and the help you provide.

All the very best.
