Solved Codec issue with .mp4 videos from Blackmagic Design Studio's ATEM TV Studio

I had something go wrong for me. I have been doing post production edits on our weekly church videos, in Movie Studio 14 Platinum, from files saved as MP4's, from a Blackmagic Design Studio's ATEM TV Studio. The OS (Windows 10) died on my laptop, at the same time a new update came in for the ATEM. Since that time, I haven't been able to open the MP4 files from the ATEM. I'm not sure if the Movie Studio 14 is missing a CODEC or if something changed in the ATEM software, but in anycase, I can no longer open the files on a machine that I never had previous issues with.

Any thoughts, or suggestions? I currently need to convert the file in VLC, which is an extra step, and a slow one at that, that I don't want to take.

Thanks!

Hi BarefooterRob

Thank you for copying this into the forum :)

I have no direct experience with using Blackmagic Design Studio's ATEM TV Studio.
Codecs in Vegas Movie Studio don't suddenly go missing or change.

I think there are three possibilities here.

1. If you have just re-installed all your programs on a fresh install on Windows 1o, Vegas Movie Studio will have to re-activate some codec licenses.
You need to make sure your computer has an Internet Connection for the codec license activation to occur.
If it can't connect to the Internet, some video codecs will not activate and that means videos will not import and/or play on the timeline.

It might be worth re-installing Vegas?
If you did try this, uninstall Vegas first and then de-register the program in your Magix account.
Instructions on how to do this are here:
www.moviestudiozen.com/forum/movie-studio-platinum/2047-cannot-register-msp-15#10360
Then re-install a fresh copy of Vegas.

Make sure to install the final build version for Vegas Movie Studio 14 Platinum, which was build #148.
You can download that from here:
www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-movie-studio-14-update-build-127-build-148--108240/

After installing and activating, re-boot your computer.
Then to test one of your videos, make sure to use the pathway Project/Add Media

2. Because you had to re-install Windows 10, any video files that you had backed up, may have "Security tags" from the previous Windows 10 install attached to them.
Sometimes when this happens, it is impossible to import videos into Vegas, because Windows thinks that Vegas does not have the correct Security credentials.
Right-click a sample video that won't work in Vegas and go to Properties/Security.
If you see "gobbly gook random characters" listed as a User Name, this will be from the old Windows 10 install.
I recommend deleting these users from the Top Folder Level and then re-booting your computer.
I also recommend running Vegas "As the Administrator".
Start Vegas by right-clicking the start icon and selecting Run As Administrator
Now try importing a video.

3. I have zero knowledge on Blackmagic Design Studio's ATEM TV Studio.
An update may have changed something, but I wouldn't know how to find that out.
If the videos are using a propitiatory Blackmagic Codec, that will most likely never work in Vegas.

You can use MediaInfo to inspect each video and check the codec being used.
mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download

If you have never used MediaInfo before, you may need to configure it after installing.
Open program and make sure Explorer Extension is selected.

After doing this, you can right-click any file and check it's Meta Data - you will see MediaInfo on the right-click Menu in Windows.

You can also export a Text file that you can copy and paste into the forum here, so we can inspect it.
Go to File/Export in MediaInfo and set a new output folder location to save the text file.

Hi DoctorZen, thanks for the thoughts. I tried items 1 & 2, but I'm still getting the warning screen that is shown below, which is the same warning I was getting before the uninstall and reinstall.

The internet connection issue that you mentioned may have been a true situation, since I was at the family cabin back in August when the OS died on me. The cabin does have internet service, but it has a tendency to cut out from time to time. Today I did the uninstall and reinstall while at my office, which has rock solid service.

I will continue to move down the list of suggestions that you have provided, and I'll follow up with their success or not.

I thought that I would add a picture of the warning message, which may help in some way.

Thanks!

Also, I am including the MediaInfo text file below. The video was just a 20 second long video that I shot, using the Blackmagic Design Studio's ATEM TV Studio. There are multiple versions of the ATEM, however we have the basic HD model, that's been out for a few years, not the newer 4k version. With our version there are no options available in the video output, as it is just saved to an MPEG-4 format.

As for the comment in your item #3, about the proprietary CODEC, I have never had an issue with opening and editing these files from the ATEM, in the 2 years or so that we've had the ATEM. In fact, one of our pastor's has MS 15, and he uses the ATEM to capture video, and is able to open and edit in MS. So I don't think that it would be a proprietary issue, but you never know.

Hi Rob,

If you are interested and have a place you can upload your source file, so I can download it, I would ticker with it on my system. Which may or may not help.
Best Regards......George

Your video should work in Vegas.
MediaInfo is reporting the writing library as Apple Quicktime.

I don't know if this will work, but make sure you have Apple Quicktime installed.
Try installing version 7.7.9 - if that doesn't install, use version 7.6 instead.
