Cats out of the bag - Boris FX has bought Vegas Pro...

Well, it seems that a couple of days ago BorisFX prematurely let the cat out of the bag that they are the new owners of of Vegas (and SoundForge).  Still no official announcement from either Boris or Magix though so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.  There is a trial version of Vegas Pro 2026 linked from the BorisFX Hub which looks very much like Magix Vegas Pro 23 but with Boris logos.  Its described as Versilon 2026.0.0.66 so not sure how this otherwise compares with the current Build 302 Trial available from Magix or if it includes the updates we've been waiting for since Build 356 was withdrawn.  I've downloaded the trial and will have a play during the coming week.

Personally, I have been using Boris FX Continuum for a few years now and love using any Boris FX product. They know what their doing and are very professional. Continuum OFX works very well with Vegas Pro and is an extremely powerful set of tools.

I'm actually in the middle of writing new articles and recording new videos, right now! No B.S.
Just got to finish some edits and make sure everything is up to my standards.

Hopefully Vegas Pro has a great future ahead for it.
I'll comment more publicly once we get confirmation about what has been leaked over this weekend.
The money isn't in the bank, until you see it in the bank!

It's obviously true as I received an email from Boris yesterday to say "Vegas Pro, Sound Forge, and Acid Pro now have a new home: Boris FX, the company behind the visual effects seen in today's blockbusters. Now, by bringing Vegas Pro and the other products into the Boris FX family, we offer you the chance to combine fast, easy video editing with comprehensive post-production tools." What happens to the Magix website, where I have all my Magix products (including past versions of Vegas Pro) registered. Will that all be migrated to the Boris website? There's no detail about that.

That is indeed an interesting question as I suspect (but will be happy to be reassured otherwise) that Boris will only pick up details for the products they have purchased (Vegas, SoundForge and Acid).  I too have a number of legacy programs in my Magix account including DVD architect V5, V6 and V7 which, des[pite rumours of the death of DVD/Bluray, still accounts for around 50% of orders for dance school concert videos.   I'm seriously concerned that with few products remaining, Magix has a fairly limited life expectancy and I may lose access to those programs going forward. I look forward to those fears being unfounded ... but I also look forward to winning the Lottery .

Your existing Magix serial numbers for older versions of Vegas Pro, will be ported into the Boris FX account system.
Please read what I have said in the new article.

I have plenty of inside information and I know that the current owners of MAGIX, Russ Media, are contracted to keep activation servers alive for the next 3 years.
So any reinstalls of older software, should still activate OK for the next 3 years.
I would guess that long term, Boris FX may take over this function when Russ Media's legal responsibilities come to an end.

At the moment I am feeling a little overwhelmed, due to all the new work I have to do.
I have a very long list of important tutorials and articles to create.
I will be making a new video very soon, about how to activate old versions of software, now that activation servers are in "basic" mode.

That is great information, Derek. Thank you. I just checked out the Boris website as they say "MAGIX customers who own any previous version of Vegas Pro or Sound Forge can upgrade to the latest versions at a single, simplified price. The exclusive offer is available until Friday, December 5, 2026. Customers may purchase their upgrades via the  Boris FX webshop .".

On the Boris FX website, the prices for an upgrade in Australia dollars are:
Perpetual licence
Vegas Pro    $220
Vegas Pro Plus   $310

The cost of a yearly subscription are as follows (Australian dollars)
Vegas Pro    $12.92 pm = $155 py - if paid in one yearly amount. But $28 pm if paid monthly.
Vegas Pro Plus   $19.19 pm = $230 py - if paid in one yearly amount. But $38 pm if paid monthly.
Vegas Pro Ultimate   $25.83 pm = $310 py - if paid in one yearly amount. But $60 pm if paid monthly.

I was also advised as follows: "Your old licenses are still hosted and managed by magix.  Your license info should eventually show up over here in the next several days. But that's just so you can upgrade through our store. " 

 

Thanks Derek.  Don't suppose you have any insight into whether BorisFX is offering crossgrade deals for Vegas 23 users who are now stranded on build 302?  I've seen a few suggestions for people to "contact support" but would have thought that if incentives were to be offered that BorisFX would formalise it rather than having to have support managing a stream of individual enquiries. Is that something they may be intending as a direct approach to VP23 owners once all the license details have been transferred across? (interestingly my VP20 and VP23 licenses are showing up in my BorisFX account but not my VP15 and VP18, nor my samplitude or Sound Forge licenses. Is the transfer of details an iterative process?)

@ilyk49 - Note that "Prices shown do not include taxes or VAT" so you need to add 10% GST to those AUD$ prices.

It's very handy that BorisFX has an Australian dollar setting (and other major currencies) and that they don't add "the Australia" tax to boost profits. It's basically a fair currency conversion. I've been a Boris FX customer for many years now and normally buy a Continuum complete subscription in Aussie dollars when they have their 25% off sales events. Now that Continuum comes with Vegas Pro Ultimate, that's a big saving I can make. However, Continuum that comes with Vegas Pro, is only licensed to work inside of VP and not other programs like DaVinci Resolve.

Free Upgrades?
A free upgrade to Boris FX Vegas Pro 2026 for MAGIX Vegas Pro 23 customers is a grey area at the moment and causing a lot of frustration!
Myself and a few others who have inside contacts, are frustrated that Boris FX has not released a public policy on this matter.
What I can tell you, is if you bought Vegas Pro 23 very recently (less than 2 months ago), support will probably offer a free upgrade to VP2026.
I think the very minimum they should offer Vegas Pro 23 owners is a one off 50% discount.

I don't know what Boris FX sales department is thinking on this. I have zero information and all my insiders also have zero information on this one topic.

I am guessing the difficulty is being caused by the different versions available now.
No one is going to get a free upgrade to Vegas Pro Ultimate, because that subscription only version is packed with $1000 of dollars worth of extras!
I can understand why that can't be given away for free.

The next difficulty is Vegas Pro and Vegas Pro Plus subscription versions, come with exclusive services: Text to Speech, Speech to Text and Storyblocks royalty free videos and music. These editions also cannot be given away for free, because Boris FX has to pay for these extra services and even regular versions have license fees that need to be paid for codecs, etc...

The only versions which could be heavily discounted are: Vegas Pro (keep for life) and Vegas Pro Plus (keep for life).

It's a tricky situation and it seems like they put it into the too hard basket for now, which in my opinion was the wrong thing to do, because it's causing unneccessary negativity.

Myself and the other insiders are hoping this will be addressed very soon.

Transfer of licenses...
Transfer of old license keys is going to be a slow process and we've been told could take a few weeks to complete.
Magix software was in a real mess late last year, when they fired huge numbers of staff and decided to move offices and servers at the same time.
I am imagining their databases are not neat and tidy.
I haven't seen a single license key appear in my account yet and I own a large number of programs, going way, way back.
The current owners of Magix (Russ Media) are contracted to keep activation servers running for next 3 years...I think I already mentioned that.

Video Editing Computer Build Guide
As you will be aware already, I have a bad habit of writing MASSIVE detailed replies on the forum here.
I have to stop doing this, because it's exhausting.
From this point forward, I'm going to write articles and make videos, for any important questions that pop-up on the MSZ Forum, that require detailed information. This is what spawned my new "video editing computer build guide for 2026". It's a question I get asked frequently on the forum: what type of computer do you advise I get for video editing?
When I started writing it, it just kept growing and growing... I'm hoping it will prove valuable and I can update it every 2 years.

 

Thanks again Derek.  I'm not going to die in a ditch or spit the dummy if there is no crossgrade but I would like some certainty as to what is intended so that I can make an informed decision on how and when I move forward.  I certainly wasn't expecting a free upgrade to one of the new BorisFX packages which, as you say, are exceptional value.  Rather, given how the Magix b302/b356 update transpired in the transition period, my thoughts would be that perhaps since BorisFX benefited from the work undertaken by Magix in developing the withdrawn b356, which for the most part have been incorporated into BorisFX Vegas 2026, they might offer a targeted one off timelimited upgrade opportunity for Magix VP23 licencees to upgrade to Boris Vegas 2026 at a price lower than the Vegas Pro 2026 package standard upgrade prices (no extras, just an upgrade from VP23 to the core BorisFX Vegas Pro 2026 program).
