Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 - Comparing All Versions

In this article I compare all the different versions of Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12.

I will explain which bundle of programs and extras come with each particular version.

Version 12

There are currently five versions altogether.

Movie Studio 11
Movie Studio Platinum 12
Movie Studio Platinum 12 Suite
Movie Studio Platinum Visual Effects Suite 2
Imagination Studio 4

Movie Studio 11

Sony Movie Studio 11 is the most basic and cheapest version of Movie Studio. It is a basic Video Editor with no other extra programs bundled with it. There is has limited Customization ability in this program. It is for people who are on a limited budget who want to easily make simple videos.

Movie Studio Platinum 12

Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 is the premium version of Movie Studio. It is the main Video Editing program bundled in the top four packages and thus is The Heart of all these versions. It is the same identical version used in these four packages.

Movie Studio Platinum 12 also comes standard with DVD Architect Studio 5.0, which is a separate program for making DVDs and BluRay Discs.

Movie Studio Platinum 12 can also be considered the little Brother of Sony Vegas Pro 12. On the surface it looks the same as Vegas Pro 12 and behaves the same. Which means that anything you learn in Movie Studio Platinum 12, will also work in a similar way in Vegas Pro 12. This makes Movie Studio a great learning tool for a beginner who one day may like to advance up into Vegas Pro 12 Editing. Vegas Pro 12 has the highest level of functionality out of the entire range of Editing Products made by Sony Creative Software.

Movie Studio Platinum 12 Suite

Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 Suite comes with three main programs:

Movie Studio Platinum 12
DVD Architect Studio 5.0
Sound Forge Audio Studio 10

Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 is an Audio Editing program that integrates perfectly with Movie Studio Platinum 12.

As well as the three programs mentioned above, this Suite version also comes bundled with some third party plugins, music samples and tutorials from Sony Creative Software.

Movie Studio Platinum Visual Effects Suite 2

Sony Movie Studio Platinum Visual Effects Suite 2 comes with three programs:

Movie Studio Platinum 12
DVD Architect Studio 5.0
Hit Film 2 Express

Movie Studio Platinum Visual Effects Suite 2 is a special software bundle that comes with Hit Film 2 Express, which is like a basic version of Adobe After Effects. So if you would like to create some Special Effects as well as Edit Video, then this is the package for you.

Imagination Studio 4

Imagination Studio 4 is the "hamburger with the lot" version in the Movie Studio Platinum 12 range.

It comes packaged with the following programs:

Movie Studio Platinum 12
DVD Architect Studio 5.0
Sound Forge Audio Studio 10
Acid Music Studio 9

Sony Acid Music Studio 9 is a complete home recording studio. Using Loops and Samples that come with the program, you can create your own royalty free music. You can also connect MIDI enabled devices to your computer and interface keyboards directly to the program for music creation. This program is a very powerful tool considering how inexpensive it is on it's own. Combined with the other three programs in Imagination Studio 4, you can create every single element that goes into your project.

Thanks for the excellent tutorials re.comparisons of Sony Movie Studio versions.
Slightly surprised that both you and Sony do not refer to the Platinum 11 version which
does contain some of the features in 12.
Sony do seem to leave us ' high & dry' at times when they squeeze the last pennies from old versions.
OK. whinge over! Thanks once more for the newsletter.

  Trying to compare the full range of V11s to V12s, I thought would just confuse people.
  Going by YouTube comments, I have learnt to keep things a simple as possible otherwise the majority of people just tune out.
  Version 12 has been out for almost 6 months now - it's current and the best version to buy.

Hi Derek. Thanks for posting these tutorials. I hope you don't mind if I chip in now and then with additional info which some may find useful.

Another factor which can most definitely affect rendering times is to have your source material (original footage) on a separate physical hard disk to your output (rendered) file. This way you're not trying to read and write to the same disk at the same time.
