How to stop media being automatically added to timeline was created by ilyk49

Hi All

Haven't used Vegas Pro 19 for while, but needed to use it recently for a project, When I open a media file, it is automatically added to the timeline. I don't recall this happening in the past - but it is annoying. How do you stop Vegas Pro automatically adding a media file to the timeline when you add the media to Vegas Pro?  I couldn't see anything directly relevant in Options/preferences.  Thanks

How are you opening the file?  I suspect you may be double clicking on it which is why it adds to the timeline.

No, not double clicking, just  single click. Just tried it again a few times - consciously using a single click  (ie go to file, open media,  locate the file I want on my computer, single click on the file and then click open). The file is then added to the timeline where my cursor is located. So annoying. This didn't happen before, so not sure why it is happening now. Thanks

I only have VP21 which may be different to VP19.
File/Open does put media on the timeline but the option is meant for opening project files, not media.
File/Import is intended for adding media to your project and it places media in your Project Media window, not on the timeline.

Thanks for that. I actually tried that a little bit after sending my last response. And yes, if I use "file/import media" then I don't have the problem. It's just when I use File/Open that the issue occurs. So thanks for that explanation. All solved.

Not sure whether to upgrade to VP21/22 (or what the benefits would be as VP 19 still works very well).

I cannot comment as VP21 is my first VP as I was a VMS user.  You can always try the 30 day trial.  It looks as though VP22 is on the horizon.

Hi ilyk49 and ericlnz
Thank you Eric for supplying the answer to this question.
Personally I only ever use File / Open to open project.veg files.
Importing media is one of those things that everyone may do slightly differently.

The two methods I use the most are:
1. Using the Explorer tab to find videos on my Hard Drives.
Once files are located using this method, you can select which ones you want, then right-click and select Add to Project Media List.
OR
Select and drag directly to the Timeline.

2. Open File Explorer in Windows, find files and drag directly to the Project Media tab or drag directly to the Timeline.

VEGAS Pro 21 + 22 Upgrade offer
If VEGAS Pro 19 works well on your computer and does what you need it to do, there is probably no need to upgrade.
However, if there is a specific newer feature in v20, v21 or v22 that would help you out, then it would be a good idea to upgrade.
The other key thing to note, is that from VEGAS Pro 20 onwards, there has been significant upgrades/improvements made to the decode/encode engine. In fact, a lot of behind the scene changes were made to VEGAS Pro 21. In practical terms, this should mean better timeline performance when opening specific types of videos - less lag! This also depends on your computer having a modern and powerful enough Graphics Card.

An example of a cool new feature in VEGAS Pro 21, is the addition of Mocha VEGAS.
If you like to do lots of cool "Masking FX" in VEGAS, Mocha makes your life a lot easier.
There is an excellent tutorial on the Boris FX YouTube channel, that shows how Mocha VEGAS works. Mocha is a Boris FX product.

There other thing you may like to read, is all the new features that have been added to VEGAS Pro 20 & 21 during their lifetimes.
Go to these pages on Movie Studio Zen here, and read from the bottom up. I kept track of all new features and bug fixes for both programs.
